Omg It's Crazy, I'm Going To Build A Pc!

Posted 01 August 2003 - 03:14 PM

so, i've been thinking of building a PC. been doing my "research" homework and all that jazz. but let's face it: all those numbers and stuff associated with mobos, processors, AGP, blah blah blah is giving me a headache.

i've got a lot of the easy stuff picked out. ("oooh! that case is purty! i'll buy that!") case, cards, and that stuff is in the bag. mobos and processors are a foreign language to me, no matter how much i read. so, if anyone has insight into a plaec to get info on what all goes into a mobo, that'd be cool. or better yet just post it here. i know i want a P4 (sloth is cringing), and i've heard that Asus have good boards, but basically i figure that with my luck i'll buy 2 incompatable parts. like, i'll be trying to fit my processor into the mobo and be pissed off when it doesn't fit.

more fun questions to come!

dude if your gunna go with a P4 i would go with go witht he Intel PEBT2, my friend uses it all the time, never ran into a problem with it. i say you go with AMD, it cheaper (price wise) and still competes with Intel.

You'd be amazed at the amount of 'low consumer' end equip. that still comes w/a floppy for drivers. YES, you could just d/l them on another system & burn them. Still, it's pretty fsckin' wasteful to burn 1.44mB on a 650mB disc just for a few drivers.

to make it short: Leave the CD-R, take the floppy...

http://secure.newegg...R.asp?ID=357244

2.4Ghz P4 w/ HyperThreading
800Mhz FSB
1GB PC3200 (400Mhz) Dual DDR-Ram
USB 2.0
Firewire
Dual 17" LCD Monitors
ATI RADEON 9600 PRO (to power the crap out of those dual monitors)
48x CD / 24x CDRW / 48x CDR / 16x DVD Combo drive
2x80GB SerialATA
Cordless MX (with the funky mouse dockstation/reciever)

Buy me one too while your at it :D

Sure you could crop some things:
you might not need that much ram
...or HDD space
...or dual monitors
...or wireless keys and mouse
:D

You notice I didn't add a floppy OR card-reader thing. This is because the second HDD takes up the room for one of these. Although I must admit those card readers are sooo handy (especially if you can get one that will boot from bios! then you would never need a floppy!)

ok i worked at a computer store as a sales rep a year ago. i dont know how good their new boards are, but a year ago and before that, they were really shitty. like we would sell 20 a month at least 3 would come back completly fucked. but like i said they could have fixed that, i said in my other post, that i know that the intel mobo works great. my friend uses that board for when he build servers for companys. also im not a fan of ATI i had nothign but bad luck with them. i know alot of people who love them so i would go with a geforce 4
