Should DreaminCode get some new advertising?

Posted 07 January 2009 - 02:42 PM

Since being on this site, i have always noticed the LivePerson advertising. Thought this was really good, so i advised my friend to use it for somthing i couldnt help her with. Since she has signed up, she has recieved non stop spam which she didnt previously recieve e.g.(5 Woman sucking on horses ......), and now she is being msn'd links by members on the site, where run through a protection program return
Internet Explorer	Detected: Backdoor.Win32.SdBot.jjs

I'm telling you, its a site which should not be advertised until they can control its members. P.S, if someone can tell me what that virus does, please illiterate.
thanks

Backdoor.Sdbot.AO is a worm with back door capabilities that gives an attacker remote access to the compromised computer via IRC channels.

That's what Symantec Corporate has on it...

I gave my idea of advertising but was shot down.....even volunteered. Wearing only a DIC shirt saying "GOT DIC?" Maybe some thongs depending on how long the shirt is...no one liked it

Nick,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. LivePerson.com (previously Kasamba) is a publicly traded company and although they've had a few hiccups over the years (especially before LivePerson acquired them) I think generally they are operating on the up and up. It sounds like your friend has a virus unrelated to anything on LivePerson.com, however, I will check with my representative at LivePerson to verify their privacy policy.

To the best of my knowledge they do not sell or distribute email addresses to any 3rd party, so any spam she is receiving would probably be coincidental.

Can you give examples of the MSN messages she's receiving as communication between LivePerson.com experts and those receiving help typically happens over their secure chat interface or via email, not through MSN.

Like I said, I'll check with my rep, but this sounds like something unrelated to LivePerson.com directly and more of a coincidental occurrence related to something else.

Here is info on your Backdoor Win32.SdBot

Win32.SdBot Information

This did not necessarily come from LivePerson - looks like it enters through IRC/Chat ports in which it could of slipped through those ports anytime and MSN messenger is pretty much a commonplace for those Spam Bots.

We had a similar instance at my work in which my computer was infected via the famous AntiVirus2008 malware attack. It attacked the ports which were open for a web conference call. I tried to combat it during the conference call and that was a nightmare.

Also, if anyone else has used their services and had similar problems, I'd like to know. I personally signed up and gave them my own credit card number and personal email address and only receive the occasional coupon offer or newsletter from them (every couple months). This was over a year ago before I started doing business with them here at Dream.In.Code, so things may have certainly changed, but the spam and virus sound like an isolated incident.

I don't think it's related. I'm registered, but I've never used it.

Not sure if it would make a difference, but I'm registered as a service provider, not someone who looks for help.

I just found out from my friend that the email and msn was given to a professional to send over the completed work. So its not so much a LivePerson problem, but some of the users they have on their site. The reason they first got in contact was because the payment didnt go through at first, and they needed to resolve the problem. Although LivePerson do not give your email address to anyone, maybe you should advise them to reconsider as to how work is sent between helper and helpee, as once the helper has the email address, they can do whatever they like with it.

I believe it's their policy not to do work outside their interface as, like you said, they would have no control over it at that point.

But, like eBay, or any other person-person transaction, they can't exactly stop the person from leaving the system and doing it on their own.

As an aside, this could happen with anyone, including people here at Dream.In.Code. If someone has a virus, and they send you a file (for your homework, or otherwise) it could very well be infected. I get IM's from people I've been good friends with that are infected and the virus is sending spam IMs to me throughout the day. They don't even know it's happening.
