I've had a little play with w7, it's Vista v2.0 for sure.
Streamlined and faster, its very similar to what happens to Vista when u use VLITE and rip the bloatware
out of it. eg. sidebar, index searching etc etc
If MS use a modular design in the final product, and keep away from "load all bloatware whether u need it or not"
syndrome as they usually do, its going to be very nice.
fingers crossed.

Re: Windows 7

Well, I've now got Windows 7 installed on my laptop (1.6GHz Pentium-M, 1.25GB RAM, 100GB 4200RPM HDD, i915GM chipset), and it's running rather better than I expected.
There is a noticeable lack of drivers for Intel video before the i945 chipset, which hurts me, and my multi-card reader doesn't work yet.
But the troubleshooters work as advertised. It installed drivers for everything it could, after I manually installed wifi drivers. Well.. With the exception of my touchpad. It was working, but I couldn't scroll or emulate middle click. The Windows XP driver from HP's website worked just fine though. Complained about an error when I rebooted, but I told it to run the app anyway, and it's all working fine now.
Overall: I like Windows 7. It's much better than Vista. I'm going to keep Windows XP and Ubuntu on this laptop, but when 7 comes out, it will probably get dual-booted with OS X on my desktop. Or put on a new laptop.

Windows 7 == Windows Vista R2. But when the public beta comes out tomorrow (9 January, 2009), I'll be downloading it and sticking it in VMWare. I'm willing to give it a try.
Wasn't Vista just a Millennium Edition escapade all over again though. Maybe this will be like when we jumped from 98, to ME, then XP. I think 7 might actually be what we have been waiting for. I have it downloaded already (both versions 32 & 64). Just need to go get some DVD r's

Been playing with it in a VM here at work and I'm not sure I care enough to upgrade at the moment, but then I am one of the few happy Vista users

I must say i was really impressed with it's responsiveness and the way it runs.
I ran it in a VM and on my PC and i personally thought it ran just as responsive as XP - something I have never said about Vista

Logging off seems to take a long time for me. Anyone facing this problem?

I installed the Windows 7 Beta a few weeks ago on a dedicated PC (Significantly worse than my laptop) and shut down and log off seems to go faster, not sure why?
File copying is ripping through far faster than I expected, I suppose MS fixed that little Vista issue.
Task-bar buttons are going to take a bit of getting used to though :]

Anyone else see the new build? With an option of what type of windows 7 you will have? Ultimate, basic, home, media, and professional? Who else is strongly opposed to having multiple different versions? Why can't they just follow Apple in that respect and have a one size fits all!

Yes, there are updates for Windows 7 Beta (if you mean security updates).

Most likely they fix major security issues that were found. Some bugs are fixed too. However, I suppose that you won't receive the full set of bug fixes in the beta version. That either will be the next beta or CTP release.

Does anyone know that if I update Vista to Windows 7, will it wipe my drive and my already installed apps?
