I have recently taken over a website for a baseball league. The guy who previously ran the site used Yahoo’s web site hosting service.
Since the sight has been turned over to me, he has canceled his account with yahoo and taken the site down.
I attempted to register the with my host and it is still staying that the URL is taken.
Does anyone know if this URL will free up now that the site is down? Or will I need to have him contact his host and have them release it?

I guess when the contract has run out, the URL should be aviable again.. Otherwise it is possible, that he registered the URL not with the
yahoo contract.. I would contact the host, if the URL is still taken by yahoo or another offerer..

Thanks for your reply! I think I am going to give it a couple more days and if it does not come available I will contact the host and see what I can do about it.

I would contact Yahoo! & make sure that they won't hold the domain or something. See if there is anyway to preregister it.

Domains that expire go in to a 30 day redemption period, then a drop period. After redemption I think they have another 5 day drop window before they are dropped back to the public. Problem is, there are so many people out there buying expired domains, you're going to need to either 1) get him to pull it out of redemption by renewing it or 2) signup for every drop/backorder service known to man to have a shot at getting it.
I can get you a list of drop services if you want, but you usually have to put some $$$ in a deposit in case it drops so they can buy it right away.

I might have to take you up on that. It almost seems like i would be better off change it to a .org or some other extention.

My sons old little league domain was a .org when I ran there website. Makes more sense than being a .com. Might as well get the .org and then you don't have to wait and hope or cough up some extra $$

Go on google. Type in whois.
Pick a link site I usally take the first one in the results.
use that.
type in the domain you bought.
You should find out exactly where he registered the domain name.
go on that site or do a whois on that provider.
It will give you contact information.
Contact them and tell the about the situation.
They should release the domain name for you then once they find out it's been sold.
good luck.

Thank you very much! I actually stumbled apon this site over the weekend. I know who has the Domain name, he just seems to think that by him canceling his yahoo account will take care of it.
I think he finally realizes what he needs to do.
