Alienware Laptop

Posted 08 January 2009 - 01:07 PM

I'm looking into getting myself a nice laptop. I'm thinking Alienware is my best bet. I've got the order page open now, looking at all the customisation. I've basically just gone for the Alienware Area-51 m15x with a 500GB HDD and the carry case.

Total price: £1,368.50 (~$2,000)

I really don't know if I want to spend that much on a laptop, but I've wanted an Alienware lappy for ages.

Thoughts/suggestions?

EDIT:
Alternatively, I have to admit that something with specs like these at such a low price is pretty impressive. But I don't know if I'd trust ebay for a big buy.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

HAHAHAHAHA overpriced The only reason to get one would to play games on it, however,m some games don't support laptop graphics chipsets, so its hit or miss sometimes

I wouldn't, but its your $$

I feel the same way about alienware laptops as I do about Apple computers.

Gaming laptops are a bad idea. Get one that satisfies your needs for when you can't be at home. If your needs aren't that pressing then spend that money to buy a good desktop computer. For that money you could build something pretty fancy.

Alienware was bought out recently, wasn't it? Ah yes...Dell now owns them. Personally I'd say thanks but no thanks, for the money I'd build a mid-sized tower system to go LANing. Right now I've got a monster of a tower that is a pain to lug...but that's what my husband is for ;)

I'm fairly certain you could get a Dell laptop with the same specs but without the Alienware prettiness.

EDIT:
At a lower price.

Thanks for the advice. I'm honestly pretty surprised that everyone's badmouthed Alienware, I thought they were pretty popular.

I'm looking on play.com at their stuff now, they've got some pretty awesome bargains. To be honest, I'll probably have to leave it a few months before making a final decision, because I also need to get some transport. (DAMN BUS TIMETABLE CHANGED AND COSTS ME 2 HOURS OF MY DAY!)

Oh, and I would get a desktop PC, but I really have no room for it. So I'm looking to get a pretty high-end laptop that's gonna last a good few years [until I get my own place] then I'll be building my own desktop computer. :)

For me, there is no difference between mac and alien ware, they are pretty the same(good for nothing) and costly too...

I'll admit Macs are slightly overpriced, but nowhere near as bad as Alienware. Or as bad as they were even a few years ago.

High end notebooks tend to run high temps, and use up alot of juice, so battery is a concern.
high temps/overheating problems, so as for it lasting a long time im not so sure.

Alienware are definitely top spec, 9800gt graphics is very adequate for playing games

I was considering one myself. I finally decided against a high end notebook.
I built a minitower (again space limitation) shuttle barebones
which is pretty high spec and got a MSI Windbook for travelling
(swapped out the hard drive for an OCZ 60GB SSD) battery now lasts 4 hours, and it runs
much faster with the SSD hard drive installed - but of course no games on that baby.

So I kind of got the best of both worlds for alot less than the cost of the alienware.
Something to consider if budget of the alienware scares you a bit.

Of course if u want games on the go, its really hard to beat those Alienware specs.
Otherwise if not primarily for games dont bother with it.

Final note:
I saw some people dissing the mac as worthless on this thread, the macbook pro is actually a fantastic notebook
(I know I set one up for a client to run OSX and Vista). and at about 600 GBP in Japan
so not outrageously expensive. And it actually runs Vista faster than alot of similarly priced
"PC" notebooks.
