i spend fucking hours trying to get this new hard-drive to work and in the end it was becuase the jumper was on "cable select" and not "slave"

why cant all 3.5" bays be configured so that you can just insert the drive through the front of the case, and have the IDE port and power plug waiting for it?
and have all the jumper stuff auto-configured in the bios?
everything is too complicated

ditto. A much bigger bitch is when *they* (the manufacture(s)) don't include a jumper diagram on the drive itself (like anyone is gonna go looking for a manual to slave an old drive 2 years later!)

BTW: IBM drives aren't as bad as they were last year. But I doubt the RMA period has dropped....

one of my hard-drives is on cable-select all the time, and there is no problem
