I don't understand the argument. Even if it isn't true, does that justify polluting the air?

"Well I am going to put unnatural crap into the air that we breathe because it doesn't actually cause global warming"

You don't **** where you eat.

I can't say the fact that humans are the cause of Global Warming is true or not, I'm not a scientist, and probably most of them don't know definitively either. But, I have been raised to be responsible with the things that I am blessed with.

So even if we don't cause it, why shouldn't we TRY to make things better.

Re: Global warming!

I've enjoyed reading through this thread, mostly because everyone else I talk to just believes in global warming because they saw it on tv or in the classroom. I'm not entirely convinced one way or another about this issue, but I do have a few things I'd like to add.

1) I'm surprised this link hasn't come up yet, but it might be of interest to check out http://www.petitionproject.org/
I'll be the first to say that such a thing as "consensus" science doesn't make sense, and that the majority isn't necessarily right. However, I think it's ironic that most of the general public thinks that a "huge majority" of scientists are convinced of man-caused global warming. A large number of so-called experts support each side, and this alone isn't enough to prove anything.

2) I completely agree that the "hockey stick" graph is/was garbage, but it's ridiculous how many people still believe it.

3) I really should research this before I post about it, but I have homework to get to so I'll just ask about it. I read a while ago that Mars was undergoing similar warming recently, and that this supported the theory that cosmic events such as sunspots, etc. were causing the warming that we were experiencing. Has anyone else heard about this? I'm not saying I support this theory...just asking about it :-)

4) Finally, I do agree with Greg's point. However, while I am in support of doing what's reasonable to protect the environment, etc, I think many politicians are saying we need to do things that are not reasonable or responsible. I also think that there are many much more pressing needs that should be considered first. We are being pressured to spend a great deal of resources on attempting to prevent something that might impact people many years down the line, but it might not. Currently, countless people are dying from starvation and lack of clean drinking water. It seems to me that it is much more responsible to spend our resources trying to help these people than it is to spend it attempting to change something that we're not even positive we can change.

All of this is obviously just my opinion and nothing more :-)

Oh, one more thing. The issue of current cold weather has been brought up, and I wanted to comment on this. I asked someone about this, and they said that this doesn't add evidence against global warming, because this temporary coldness is most likely due to the fact that the ice-cap is melting which is bringing cooler water into the oceans and thus leading to temporary cooler temperatures. Not sure what you guys think about this, but it kinda makes sense.

Sorry for the long post,
Thanks for reading!
Michael

Fact..cant believe anyone that has enough education to do any type of I.T. work (other than help desk *kidding*) would really argue the fact it exists. Now the cause the last ten years have been the hottest on record is up for debate. Personally Al Gore hooked me when he did his chart on Carbon Levels.

That's somewhat accurate. It is misleading though. The earth experienced a warming trend around the 1200s. So warm in fact that England could grow grapes. It was this change in climate that allowed the human population to flourish and thrive. It ducked down a bit and has remained consistent over time. The hottest year on record, ever, was 1998. The earth has cooled every year since then.

Global warming is democrat fear mongering. Should we recycle? yes. Should we take care of the planet? yes. Should I go out a spend 5 extra dollars on toliet paper that's been recycled 7 times? No.

The "hockey stick" graph is the one that moron Al Gore showed to the U.N. That is highly inaccurate since it does not take into account more then 200 years of recorded human history.

Volcanoes and cow farts account for more heat/greenhouse gas/etc... then anything us humans have made.

Eh, your information is inaccurate as well however. The earth hasn't been cooling by any of the major organizations looking at it though from a global perspective. According to NASA, 2005 was the hottest year on record, but ultimately it's irrelevant which year is the hottest, because a single year is not enough to show a trend. If you arguing that cooling is happening because we haven't had a year as hot as 1998, then you'd have to be ignoring the temperatures of the following years in comparison to each other. And that's assuming 1997 and before never existed. We're not looking for perfect graphs here.

Also, I'll take to claim your historical remark on grapes being grown in England in 1200 because of global climate. If you want a more direct reason for grapes being more populated in England, wiki the Norman Conquest. And if you want a reason for their decline, I think you should think about what Henry VIII did. Your dates are accurate for that, the Domesday Survey of 1200 shows the first signs of the expansion of vineyards. Which was only a few decades after the Norman Conquest.

What the hell does employment have anything at all to do with a belief?
