This doesn't make sense. The compaq laptop doesn't execute the files. Can you be a little more specific as to what it is (or isn't doing)? You're probably going to find this problem with whatever distro that you try to run.

Maybe add some more memory. I'm guessing this is a 486? Your best bet is a distribution without graphics.

I would go either Kubuntu or Slax, depending on what you're into

Well, if the laptop is that old, Kubuntu/Ubuntu may not run. Xubuntu may even be too much for it.
He may be limited to Debian with TWM or similar.

Xubuntu flies on my old compaq (from 2002-03?). I can't remember the specs right now, but imagine Vista on the first laptops (slow as hell because they hardly 'met the requirements'). Now imagine Windows XP going that slow.

Or Backtrack 3 (ftw!!!11one!). My suggestion would be Xubuntu. Fedora might be a good choice, especially if you're a noob. It's not very customizable, but it is the most reliable os i've used.
edit: I was joking about Backtrack. You could drive yourself to insanity trying to install it.

Fedora would be a horrible choice for an older machine. It's got so much crap starting with it that the machine would take a decade to boot.

My choice would be Archlinux with xfce, nice, simple and just the stuff you need.

Why can't your slax play dvds? I had a similar problem with slackware (upon which slax is based).
