Html Text Pop Up Windows

Post icon  Posted 19 January 2009 - 06:34 AM

Hi All,

I am new to html programming and I am working on a weather related application using html frames in which I go to a particular site to pull off a text forecast. I split the main window into sections using:

<frameset rows="43%,2%,25%,2%,25%">
<frame src="LEW-WDashboard/s-radar.html" name="radar" SCROLLING=NO>
<frame src="LEW-WDashboard/s-blank.html" name="Blank">
<frame src="LEW-WDashboard/s-srf.html" name="SRF">
<frame src="LEW-WDashboard/s-blank.html" name="Blank">
<frame src="LEW-WDashboard/s-lrf.html" name="LRF">
</frameset>

and my s-stf.html look like

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="30" />
</head>

<body bgcolor="lightblue">

<p><a href="http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/raw/fp/fpcn11.cwto..txt">Current Forecast</a><BR></p>
<p><a href="http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/raw/fp/fpcn11.cwto..txt" target="_top">Current Forecast Large Window</a>
</p>

</body>

</html>

Again let me say that I am new to HTML programming and would like to be able to:
1) have this text file load automatically on startup as apposed to hitting the link button and
2) have the ability to launch the text in a pop up window (I was thinking about an Alert type of popup)

can anyone guide me to appropriate resources or example of doing such activities?

Thanks in advance.....Steve

Hello Hallidas, welcome to DIC.
First off, please use html tags around your code:
[html][/html]

I have a question, why are you using frames? Also, why do you have two frames with the same name? Do you know you have only 97% of the total space used?
For the popup you'd use window.open() in java script: http://blazonry.com/...ipt/windows.php to autoload it you'd use: http://www.w3schools...sref_onload.asp though popup blockers usually block that. The code to click on a link and do something is onclick: http://www.w3schools...ref_onclick.asp

If you need any more help let us know, but please give a link to a working (or if it's the case not-working) example of what you have done.

Hi Steve. To read in text files before the page has loaded, you probably will need to use a server side script, such as php or asp. Which one you choose will depend on your hosting platform, and googling 'read text file php/asp' will provide you with a wealth of tutorials to get you started.

Opening a popup window is done using javascript. There are millions of tutorials on the topic kicking around, for example: Popup windows.

Edit: Doh, too slow!

Hi Arenlor,

My idea for using frames is as follows:

I need to populate my screen with numerous products like radars/(worded forecasts; Current/Extended/)/Current Observations and Forecasted Products. So I thought using frames would alow me to control product population since source of products are scattered over the Web in various formats (png/txt/possible xml). I am playing with this on my home system and do not have applications building applications. If this is not the way to go could you possible suggest an avenue to persue?

Thanks....Steve

I'm guessing you have no access to PHP or ASP, but I'd suggest instead of a frame to use an iframe. They would allow you to use divs and therefore CSS/AJAX to control your data.
