you are right we get these all the time.... but most of the time it is in the right forum. Anyway, get your degree in computer science or related. Learn as much about c++ as you can, as well as OpenGL and DirectX. Start now by going to your local book store and getting reference manuals and "teach yourself" programming books. 90% of your learning will be done on your own 10% will be taught to you by the univerisyt.

hello georgejohnston, i like your enthusiasm towards the subject :) , actually i started game programming few months ago after i found myself somehow good in JAVA, i currently make GUI based games, so not so much graphics yet they still can be fun, in order to start game programming you have to have some knowledge in a certain programming language, and when you start, start doing small and simple games in order to practice and then start making more and more complex onse as you advance in programming and get experience in game development. For a start, check out this link:http://www.gpwiki.org/,
it gives you an overview of game programming and it talks about all the concepts needed and related to it, i believe such knowledge would be very important especially if you are new... anyways i hope this helps, good luck ;)

You can get a Quick start to your Game programming carrer by using a game maker...

A good game maker is RPG Maker XP ... sure its not free but its not expensive either. ITs a cool game maker

Never too old! I think the oldest member I've met here was in his 40s and just started doing web design in college! :)

I started at 16. It really varies, but in the long run it's not too important.

Hey George,

I'm 46 years old and starting back into programming as a career I hope....

I started programming BASIC when my family won a Commodore VIC20 (I had to save my code on cassette tapes), if that tells you how long ago I STARTED this foray into insanity! Programmed Fortran and COBOL in college (the first round).

I just got into Java programming a couple years ago, and I took some college classes and also went to a tech school (for other things as well like an A+ certification).

Never give up the faith brother!

George joined Dream In Code in January, & was last on in April.

Of 2009.

Don't think he's coming back anytime soon, & going to see your reply of support.

I wouldn't bother with creating games from scratch or OpenGL or DirectX or java etc.... I made this same mistake when I was in school for 6 years getting my master in computer science. For fun, I would create all my games from scratch, including creating my own sprites, animations, game engine... etc. This is the old way of making games and no longer needed in 2019. If you go this path, your games will be outdated and mostly 2D. Don't get me wrong, its fun to learn all this but again not needed. plus you can always learn this in future.

From my 6 years of experience, this is all you need to know. When its comes to programming games, you only need to learn one of the following tools. I would recommend Unity for you since you already know some Visual Basic.

  • Unity = Free. uses C#, which is simpler to visual basic.
  • 3d max = Not Free.
  • maya = Not Free.

You can create some amazing 3D games in Unity with just lil experience in Visual Basic.

Btw, If you still want to learn how to code games in Java for whatever reason. I am willing to put you on the right path by qucily teaching you some basic game structure stuff. Just private message me with you email.

hope this helps

if you had started school when the OP was made, you would have another six years to go to reach the age of this topic. Keep in mind the current status of the industry & technology at the time of the OP & advancements in over a decade.

Thank you for adding to the discussion. Do you have any tutorials, or example sources to go with your suggestions? That could go quite a ways to helping someone get started.
