Dual Boot

Posted 21 October 2003 - 06:11 AM

I guess that's a Triple Boot but.. detail

I've Installed XP on one partition, Win2K on another. I have a third partition which I want Linux to be installed in.

I haven't yet installed Linux because I want to ask:

1) When installing Linux, and have the option of choosing where to install the boot "file" or whatever, what do I choose. From memory, there are 3 options... loading Linux from floppy, installing in first sector of main boot file and a third.

2) Once installed, what do I need to do to have all 3 OS's display in a menu (LILO, GRUB, windows standard... whatever)?

I have searched the net and there are a number of ways of doing it, but I have not found one that explains it in "lamer" terms... for linux lamers like me. (So if anybody has time to explain it to me, don't use terms like "just do this, flip that, change and superimpose your super exo rego sector of your MK-x-oB file", please :) ) or... links would be just as nice.

From what I read, I have a very basic understanding of what is involved, but am confused yet eager to learn.

Thanx.

It's a good thing that you are installing Linux last. This way everything will be pretty much automated for you. You will be asked which bootloader to use (Lilo and Grub are the most common) and where to put it.

I'm using a laptop and have a dual boot with XP and Linux. I mostly use XP and it bugged the hell out of me to see Lilo everytime I started my PC. So, I decided to put my bootloader on a floppy. Everytime I want to run Linux I just start the PC with the boot disk and hey presto there is Linux. Very easy and comfortable. You will of course still see the windows boot loader to chose whether you want to use 2k or XP. (if you boot without a disk...)

If you chose to put the boot loader in the main boot record it will overwrite the windows loader. When installing Linux it will generally detect if you have multiple OS's and do all the work for you so you don't have to worry about that really.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is that it doesn't really matter where you put the boot loader. The floppy worked for me... but you might have different preferences.

Thanks for the reply.

More question tho :)

Is this a good or bad thing?

Does that mean that if I don't want to start Linux from a floppy, the Linux installation will make a loader menu with all 3 systems, for me?
And if so, do I or don't I chose to put the boot loader in the main boot record?

It's a good thing because you have to :)

I don't know if it's a good thing that I repeat stuff that others already have put in words in a good way :)
So, here's a link that should give you all the answers...

http://www.justlinux...Booting_Your_OS

If that's not enough, google will probably give you heaps of other useful links.
