Personal Rant-age

Posted 23 October 2003 - 01:30 PM

I get banned for a week from my computer, I can deal with that, it's not like anyone is up at 4:30am to stop me anyway. <_< Then my brother starts with his holier-then-thou crap about me being on the computer alot! He thinks game modding, website dev, and reading stuff is unimportant?! :bs: Let's see him make 3D models, code a site from scratch (with PHP and mysql), and figure out how to make cool FS animations with Blender. :ha: Alls he does on my computer is play pinball, MSN games, and looks for Oakly sunglasses at eBay online! Then he has the nerve to tell me that it's stupid to refine my 5|<i||5?! The outrage! And on top of all this my dad tell me he's happy that I have such computer skills but that I shouldn't be on all the time. How do you think I got/refined the skills and know-how that I have/do?! And besides I'm not on all the time either. I do my school work, I have a paper route, and I have a part time job coding a website.

It almost make me can't wait to move out....Hey Nick, is you company looking for a php/mySQL newb programmer?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You said it yourself you plan on being up at 4.30 AM to be on the computer. So to be honest, you probablly are on the computer a bit to much.

Sure its nice to be able to game mod, develop websites, 3d model and learn php / mysql, but its useless to learn all of these when you should really only focus on one if you actually want to do somthing with your skills.

His reasons to be on the computer are as good as yours. If he enjoys to search for sunglasses, and socialize on MSN, then thats fine. A computer isn't just for your interests, so I see nothing wrong with what he is doing.

I am guessing you are around 16.. (edit: I checked your profile and you are)..

Not to offend you, but I really doubt you could survive on your own (move out) at this age, or even next year. And once you do, you'll regret it -- probablly.

Note to self:update profile. I'm 17 now. :P And my profile says my birthday is "17 June 1986".

Now for the Q&A section. (I'm not mad at you)

"I have a paper route". I need to be up about that time anyway.

Actually all of those are related believe it or not. I learned php and mysql because I was tired of coding so many pages of HTML for my mod work.

I don't really have a problem with him doing that stuff. It's his attitude towards me about me being on my computer. My point was that he just plays while I do something that can/could be productive (in the future tense). Infact I'm part of a dev team to make a game. Though ATM it's not really getting anywhere since most of the guy's are at school this time of year. And he just plays those zone games like Hexic, or whatever it's called.

Age, read above. #1 I'd wait until I would have a good job (hence the "Hey Nick, is you company looking for a php/mySQL newb programmer?", yes I know nick/Fygar) #2 well there really isn't a #2. :P

If you feel that strongly, then use your paper route money to build a machine (not enough $$$, think McDonald's, etc.)

#1 rule I learned as a kid (& you *are* a kid); if you hate sharing (personal toys) then go buy your fsking own (only way I got a slot car track as a kid, or a RC car, Casio watch, etc.) But when you do, don't ever expect anyone else to give you support for it (except your friends who have these toys & will only offer knowledge).

Welcome to the Kingdom...

A steady job isn't a job at "Nicks company" as a php/mysql programmer, especially if you're a 'newb'.

You won't even make enough for groceries doing that, not to mention RENT.

I can understand developing websites, and php/mysql, but to be a good 3d modeler, you won't have time to make a living off of web design. The only good 3d modelers i have seen spend all their time on the computer learning and practicing.

You gotta learn to share the computer. Just cause you think what he is doing isn't as productive as what you could be doing doesnt give you a right to be on it any more than him.

your situation sounds similar to what mine was about a year ago.

Why dont you make a schedule. Let your brother on 2 hours a day, Let your parents on 2 hours a day, and then do your thing for however long you need.

During those 4 hours you're not on the computer, be at work at a real teenage job. Work a register, stock shelves, be a "Shopping Cart Relocation Engineer" (thanks Rich), or flip McBurgers. Do that 4 hours a day for a couple of months and you'll have yourself enough cash to build your own machine that 10x better than the one your on now plus a couple extra bucks for networking parts.

And who knows, maybe all that 3D modeling might land you a hott girlfriend who you can start spending some time with instead of your family's computer.

You are the one with the problem. Believe me ;)

When I lived at home I had the same problem. All I know about Flash, I learned in front of THAT computer. What I've learned about photoshop, illustrator, quark, 3dmax etc etc etc etc I have learned in front of THAT computer. Except my mum had NO problem getting up at 3:30 or 4:30 in the morning to give me an ear-full and that I should go to bed ("this instance!")... the tucka-tucka-tucka of the keyboard kept waking her up. My brother, too, kept bitchin' about how he has no computer time.

However, I started forcing myself to go out. I would make one phone call to a friend to meet up with and I HAD to go. After a while I got used to it and started getting a life.

Go out. Get a LIFE. And in time you'll find that it will help you think clearer too. You'll be sitting at MacD's eating a cheeseburger with friends and a solution to a probelm will suddenly resolve in your mind. And then when you get back home you do it.

Your mind and body NEED to rest and to relax from the onslaught that you punish them with. ;)

Believe me.. you have the problem.. not your family.

OK now that I'm at a computer I'm not banned from I can read and reply. YAAA!!

Your reply made me think the most. I hate it when people prove me wrong. I should have honored my parents better then I did. :(

I noted what you said and I have enjoyed watching the History channel immensely.

I have already built a computer, that's the one I was refering to in my posts. Also it's pretty new, I built it this last April/May.

Maybe "newb" wasn't a good word to use. I've already coded one site (Sound Image), I hope to get around to the design (left from the first site done by someone else) after I get the product database in. I'm waiting on my boss/me trying to learn Quick Books to find and export the inventory list. As stated above it is my computer. And as I have also stated I don't care that he does what he does it's his attitude about me being on and what I do.

I have two jobs. One as a paperboy, and the other is working on soundimagewillmar.com. My boss hired me knowing that I knew hardly any php and mysql, I have learn tons while coding the site. And I've also setup my own home network.

Red|5: you have an excelent idea. Infact I'm wanting to go to a concert tomorrow.

Nope I havn't. Sadly Willmar doesn't have one and people here aren't into computers that much. :sigh:
