a wildcard is nothing more then some character, that you determine, will/would replace a value or values so that it can be found. in most cases the asterisks (*) is used for the wildcard. for example

if i did a search for say
d*
i would get everything that starts with a d
some results may be dog, derek, did, do, definitely and so on.

however, if i did something like
d*d
i would get everything that starts with a d and ends with a d
some results may be did, dropped and so on.

and again if i did something like
d*d*
i would get everything that starts with a d and would contain a d in the string along with other characters
some results may be did, dropped, didn't and so on.
