Ugly times those were.

Please. Let's all wring our wrists and whine about how women are so powerless and marginalized in past and presnt society.

KYA, while still young, unwittingly takes a life long vow of celibacy...

It's got that nice sarcastic tinge that gives it a distinctive flavor everyone expects, but it's overpowered by a heaving portion of disrespect.

21 year old white male. Let's at least get it right.

And there's no disrespect intended. Anyone who thinks women are getting an unfair rap is either a feminist, ignorant, or in denial.

Victim mindset. /thread

edit: If any group should be bitching, it should be the young caucasian males, we're a minority now. WAHHHHHHHHH

O wait, you don't see me doing it.

Lol, as a 40 year old white male, I'm allowed. ;)

Nothing so deep as an opinion on modern prejudices. Rather, any guy who wants to go on about how women have it easy may not have an easy time finding like minded women.

I see women getting shafted in numerous venues and I'm a guy. I can only assume I witness only a fraction of the problem.

Yea, it's nothing like the 50s and women who do things that weren't acceptable in the culture of the 50s are commonplace.

But I will play the devil's advocate here... Women do get cheaper driving insurance and all those scholarships. Actually there's all sorts of scholarships advertised for what race you are and are great if you're not a while male.

I personally think the difference between back then and now is that now the scale tips both ways. I'm not a fan of giving someone special treatment based on their gender (obviously). I'm an advocate of equal rights here, I won't hold back.

Also, last semester I used to hang out with someone who got the female engineering scholarship and it stacked up allowing her to go to classes for cheap, but she ended up doing stuff she hated. She really didn't like engineering and did it just because of all those "minority" scholarships.

I'm more for scholarships that are based on what you can do, at least it feels like you actually worked for the bonus money you've gotten. Gender or race doesn't mean you are a good engineer. Culture, maybe, but not gender or race.

Whoa. Let's take a step back. I'm not saying women have it easy. BUT the playing field is even if not slightly tilted in favor of women. Anyone one who denies that is just wrong.

Actually, you have a valid point in some respects. There have been a number of initiatives over the last number of years (including a change in attitude from most folks) that present women with better opportunities than could be had years ago. Looking at it from a male perspective, it certainly appears that the playing field tilts toward women's favour (and of course, you're speaking mostly of North America - there are many locations where no strides have been made at all).

The problem is that there is still an 'old boys' club (for lack of a better term) that wields power, and can manipulate/guide the outcome of any affirmative action programs in place. This becomes more and more evident as you rise through the ranks, although can still be evident anywhere.

It's mostly attitude now that causes problems...but things continue to change, as they always will.

You can still argue either way actually. Just because someone doesn't share the same absolute view as you doesn't mean they're wrong.

As one lacking a willy in the IT sector, I can assure you the playing field is not even. Not by a long shot.

And now I will shutup and avoid this thread altogether before I my inner feminist finds the carpet staples...

I understand that there are always cases that go against the norm...but they are not indicative of the industry overall. I can tell you i have worked in every capacity from programming to running large departments. the old mindset still exists, but as mentioned, it is getting better.

Just because there is a lack of females in the IT world overall doesn't necessarily indicate a bias or negative attitude towards women. It could be any number of factors, including, but not limited to, women apathy towards the field.

Remember the "Can boys and girls programme" thread? Gender is irrelevant until someone feels slighted.
