Looking at it from a male perspective, it certainly appears that the playing field tilts toward women's favour (and of course, you're speaking mostly of North America - there are many locations where no strides have been made at all).
The problem is that there is still an 'old boys' club (for lack of a better term) that wields power, and can manipulate/guide the outcome of any affirmative action programs in place. This becomes more and more evident as you rise through the ranks, although can still be evident anywhere.
It's mostly attitude now that causes problems...but things continue to change, as they always will.
