Functional Programming, and sections

Posted 14 February 2009 - 10:04 PM

For the last year or so, I've been throwing myself deep into the world of functional programming, being there has showed me that currently popular paradigms aren't the only feasible way to program. More and more people are getting into functional programming and new languages are made functional very often. Such as C# and F# and Clojure and other emerging LISP dialects. Haskell still reigns supreme in the functional section when it comes to active community users. I believe that functional programming should have either it's own section on DiC or have a sub forum in "other languages". You wouldn't necessarily have to make a sub forum for each language, if it's threads you are worried about having an entire subforum dedicated to all functional programming languages would probably get a good few. I suggest you at least put it up for a month as an experiment and see what happens.

I noticed in the LISP thread, a few threads below me, the higher up's (not including skyhawk, I'm actually attempting to build upon his sub forum idea.) seem to think that a programming languages power is somehow related to it's immediate popularity and that is not the case. I'm not here to say that if you put up a functional programming section or sub forum that it will get a lot of threads, but what I am saying is it will probably get a good few. Functional programming languages get a lot of attention on Stackoverflow.com and in each languages respective communities. I believe that the reason the threads relating to functional programming are hardly ever posted in the Other Languages section is most likely related to the fact that there are other forums strictly dedicated to functional programming languages and people just don't bother.

I say try it out. I leave it up to you.

-Rayne. I haven't proof read this, so it might have some typos or errors. If so sorry.

I agree. We have a discussion going and will have something next week in terms of some specific languages/topics in our Other Languages forum.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I agree with you.
Functional programming should definitely have its own place here, though I believe it will not get much attention unless it has its own forum on the list.

We've gone ahead and created 2 new forums in Other Languages.

"Functional Programming"

And

"Assembly"

Enjoy :)

If those areas take off, we'll move them out from under Other Languages. But it's up to you guys to make them successful, as I don't know anything about those languages ;)
