does a software engineer need certification?

Posted 17 February 2009 - 07:50 AM

Do software engineers(graduates.. not senior developers) need certification

according to my perception the actual role of a soft engg is to design/engineer/architect software , not actually code it

so , do graduating soft enggs need certs?

actually i am doing grad in SE , and i was wondering that by doing oracle or java cert i am limiting myself to a certain area.

i have also heard that certs are really needed as they show ur practical strength

so i am asking this question and also advice that is this perception of mine correct that i should seek a career in java , scja , scjp and so on..?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I don't think it's legally necessary to have a certification to make software and sell it, although I'm sure it helps on a resume.

Yeah, otherwise we'd have "Joe the Software engineer" :P

On a serious note, certain languages have certs, PHP comes to mind. Various vendors/corporations offer their certs like cisco, Microsoft, etc... Couldn't hurt to have a few on your resumé.

Wait so you do have to have a certification to develop software professionally? I'm not sure if you're saying yeah to his question or my response.

I was agreeing with you. It's not required.

programming or coding is the basic of every software. if you do not know programming then it means you also dont know the solution of problem. if you know the programming and your logic is clear then you can do work on every language because every language has different structure but the logic of every solution will be same. i suffered from this kind of problem. software engineer should learn the programming. it is not necessary that you learn it at higher level but you should clear your logic. if you clear your logic then you can move on any language platform and you will only need to learn the programming structure. example in c++ you declare the variable type but in php you dont need to declare the variable type just add $ with every variable.
