What do you think the best distro of linux is? Has anyone played much with Fedora? RedHat has always made a good product, but is it a good leap from the windows world?

I'd like something I can use winamp (or equivalant), office (or equivalant), FTP software, etc. etc. DreamWeaver would be a major plus...

Depends.

I've been with Red Hat from 6.2-9.0, now I have some clients running Enterprise edition. It has a good package manager (up2date) but you have to pay.

If you care a lot about ease of maintenance and want to keep current with the latest security/bug fixes (you do) then either pay for a Red Hat Network subscription ($5/month?)

-OR-

get Debian and use their (free) apt-get package manager. Note that Debian stays far away from the bleeding edge, so if you want something that's pretty new get a closer-to-the-edge distro. I use Debian for servers.

Go here:

http://www.linuxiso.org/

and read up on the different distros. Then download a few isos, burn disks, and try them out. There are many winamp equivalents. Openoffice is a fantastic clone of Office (and free). FTP - not a problem. Dreamweaver? I don't think it's available on Linux. If you just want a good IDE you can use Eclipse or Quanta. If you want a WYSIWYG editor you could play with amaya or Netscape Gold (yes, it's still around).

HAVE FUN!

fedora is kinda dumb, for me there was always a package conflict when i tried to update something, gentoo and portage completely elimiates that, but gentoo is not for the weak seeing that it kicks all ur asses.

How's that? By panicking the kernel? I heard gentoo's motto is, "Sometimes it actually installs."

true it took me 4 days to get it to install correctly, but each time it messed up, was idiocy on my part, put practically everyone here in the ACM uses gentoo, and i kinda like having firebird on stage one, taking on average no longer than 3 seconds to load any webpage, picts and all,(well except big arse flash, and shockwave sites)

i have to agree with Nova Dragoon red hat and Fedora suck mainly because of RPM's they suck by their general nature. I like Slackware, It works with everything and its one of the fastest and the install isn't bad. if you put reiserfs4 on there your unstopable.
