If you are logged in as an administrator try using the full path to regedit.

It will be in the Windows folder so in most cases c:\windows\regedit.exe should work.

If not then regedit has been deleted from your system.

If it has been deleted check in c:\windows\system32\dllcache folder see if its in there. In most cases system file protection should already have put it back if it was enabled so I am not sure if it will be in there.

You can also copy it off the XP CD. on the XP cd there will be a REGEDIT.EX_ file and an EXPAND.EXE in the i386 folder on the cd.

Try running the following (from the command prompt) where D is the drive letter of your CD.

d:\i386\expand.exe d:\i386\regedit.ex_ c:\windows\regedit.exe

If that is successful try re-running regedit.

Danny

Something trashed your Windows programs, probably in order to protect itself.

What I would do is jot down your XP registration code, get an XP OS disk that matches your OS (home/Pro) & do an OS repair.

Boot off the cd, select to install, F8 to accept the agreement, & then at the next screen select R for repair. Not the console repair, but the OS repair. It'll go through the same steps like an install, but what it's doing is removing the Windows core dlls & sys files, & then reinstalls them. At one point you will be prompted for the registration key. This will reinstall your missing exe's.

You'll want to make sure that you then do any hot fixes, updates, or service packs that are missing.

Best of luck!
