Service Pack 2, And What It Means To You!

Posted 12 May 2004 - 02:32 PM

SP2 has 2xx megs of security updates... which include major additions to IE.

Popups are stopped completely... even if they are called to a local file on the same server. Designers/techies won't have a problem but client/business people will have a fit.

Flash is stopped by IE now too -- you have to manually allow Flash to activate on the webpage; pretty rediculous in my opinion but... i'm using RC1 so maybe after public feedback they'll change it before it goes final.

FYI for you popup-site freaks.

In addition, originally, SP2 was going to not work on pirated versions of XP, then the descision was made to allow it due to the security vulnerabilities and fact that patching is more important than lost revenue.

Now they are back to not allowing install on pirated versions, of course just like the older versions, I'm sure someone will crack it and it will work anyway *sighs* Atleast they had a heart for a few days.

Their also getting rid of the Internet Connection Firewall and replacing it with the all new Windows Firewall witch is more like its own software client then something built in.. and as for the flash and other 3rd party scripts not being able to work without user permission, I don’t think that will change because it has to deal with an antitrust issue Microsoft is addressing, not so much a security issue, where as features like the all new pop up blocking are some of the things Microsoft are giving to the user because of public demand, another new feature is that windows messenger is completely gone, if you want to use it you have to go and get MSN messenger.. There are tons of other new things to come, I used to know a lot of them in detail that I learned from the Microsoft TS2 seminar but I forget a lot of them, lots of security fixes... I’m also trying out the RC 1 release, looks good so far.

Yeah, there's a bunch of keygens out there that would change your registry to a valid key so you could install SP1, I think I've still got one. Rumour has it that if you had done that to install SP1, SP2 will be no problem.

Understood. I meant only to inform, not advocate, but you raise an excellent point.

SP2 means: Reinstall of windows for me. Owned my kernel, gave me a shit load of random reboots and BSOD's then finally wouldnt initiate the windows loading screen.

Imma wait to reinstall SP2 until it's available through windows update

And where exactly do you get this at? I don't see it on windows update anywhere? I don't even know if I want it anymore after hearing all of the bad things come out of it.
