Updating My Records

Posted 14 March 2009 - 02:36 AM

I've been editing my update script but I can't seem to succeed. I still have lots of errors when I try it.

Here is my first code:

Notice: Undefined index: submit in F:\thesis\admin\users\update_cust1.php on line 47
Notice: Undefined variable: row in F:\thesis\admin\users\update_cust1.php on line 55
Notice: Undefined variable: id in F:\thesis\admin\users\update_cust1.php on line 61
Notice: Undefined variable: row in F:\thesis\admin\users\update_cust1.php on line 66 up to 69

Put error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE); at the very start of your file (make sure it's in PHP tags!).

The errors you're mentioning are from undeclared variables and indexes that aren't present in the $_POST array. Since they default to NULL, and are harmless errors, turning them off is fine. The line above displays all errors except for notices, which are the error types you're receiving. Notices are generally only used during script debugging, when things aren't working appropriately.

Also, bear in mind that your form appears to be attempting to load data from variables that are not initialized. update_cust1.php is trying to load $id which is never set there, along with stuff from $row, which I assume is meant to be returned from the database. However, I don't see a select query there either. Your second file has those things, but the first one does not. You're also not validating and cleaning user input, which opens you up to security risks like SQL injection and XSS attacks.

@Valek
Thanks a lot for the time. Uhm.. I'm quite confused with updating. Updating is really my problem ever since.
I haven't put any validation since I'm quite focusing on how the update will work. But I'd be putting validation rightafter.

Is it not updating the records? The question sounded like you just wanted the notice errors to go away.

Why the two quotes for the value here, and what's the semi-colon at the end for?
<input type="text" class="login" name="fname" size="20px" value=""<?php echo $row->id;?>""><br /><br />;

I'm pretty sure if you look at the source of the page, you'll see:
<input type="text" class="login" name="fname" size="20px" value=""1"">

Which will probably not work properly.

Oh sorry, I didn't notice the 2 quotes, anyway, my error still shows like this:
Notice: Undefined index: id in F:\thesis\admin\users\update_cust1.php on line 8

You're getting notice errors again, so I'm assuming you removed the error_reporting() line. $row->id isn't set. Besides, if $row is an array, you'll want to call it with $row['id']. But if it's not set, you're still going to get the undefined index notice.

By default, error reporting is set the way I showed you with the error reporting() function: all errors except notices.

I've done that, using $row['id']. and yet, the notice is still there. I tried to remove the error_reporting() line because it still doesn't work.. :(

I'm sorry for being low pick up :(
