Hey there regarding upgrading to xp, i take it you don;t know how to ghost a hard drive so here we go
Step 1.
firstly since you run a business you prob have a multi lis, so you can install a certain no of xp os's with the same Liscence number just make sure your covered by the liscence agreement before you start, next
step 2
find out what drivers (software which controll your hardware Graphics, sound etc) you require for xp quite simply go to my computer on the desktop right click on the icon a menu will appear and go down to Manage and click on it, next in manager go to Device manager click on it , on the right you will see a list of the various hardware you have on you pc.
step 3
the important drivers you need to write (pen + paper) down will prob be modems, display adapters, sound video and game controllers. windows xp should cover the majority of the drivers anyway if not (just look up the manufactures website of the drivers you require or go to www.driverguide.com)with service pack 1 then service pack 2 may have them, if your wondering what the hell is service pack 1/ 2 is and do i have have them, all you have to do to check if you have them is go to a computer which was upgraded and on the my computer right click go to properties and it will tell you your windows version and service pack installed, you can download service pack from the microsoft website for free anyway.
Step 4
Next and most importantly you need to back up any important information stored on the old pc and save it on to disk. Heres where most people make the mistake of loosing important information.
Step5
restart the win 98/ me etc pc now here is where you'll have to try around when you pc starts up you will see a black screen with white writing it will give you the instructions as to how to get into the BIOS , usually it's either the F2, F10 or the DEL button, you will have to hit one of those keys before windows boots in order to get to BIOS (while the black screen is on), Now when you get into the BIOS you will see a list of menus for your pc, you need to go to the boot option part of the menu, next you will see the following PRIMARY BOOT, SECONDARY BOOT in the boot option, usually your harddrive boots first or you floppy drive so because yous Windows xp disk came on cd you need to make it boot from cd first (cd drive primary) on primary hit the enter key and go down the list to you cd drive highlight it and hit enter, (put in the win xp cd) next you need to save this setting so that when your pc restarts it will boot from cd, usually to save you hit the F10 button to save settings , it will probably tell you on the some part of the screen what button to save the setting made. hit the enter key to save, and the pc will restart .
step 6
the pc restarts and "press any key to boot from cd" may pop up if it does well hit any key if it dosn't well just wait a while, a blue screen will appear telling you it is checking hardware let it do its job, next you need to delet any partitions in the hard drive so you can format it any partitions on the options win98 partition highlight it press D press enter and format the hard drive fully in NTFS "not quickly"
step 7
just follow the instructions after that its a piece of cake
GOOD LUCK

all distros can have battery indicators, its a acpi function or something you can build into the kernel, and has a /proc interface
then just get a porgram that checks for it, gkrellm is built to check for this /proc file

You were more than OK to bring this thread back up, the information you provided was quite useful. I imagine you found it on Google, so the next person that finds it will have good information. Thanks!!
And amen to the DVD thing, I have yet to get DVD software to work properly in linux.
