Question about two different styles on a Wordpress theme

Hey there all!

I am theming my Wordpress site and had a question about alternate pages.

The thing is, the front page of my theme lies at http://tinyurl.com/clu57r.

All the posts and additional pages (should I set up a category browse page or the like) are going to use a variation of the first template. See http://tinyurl.com/dgyzk2 .

Essentially.. All I am doing is having a featured article on the front page, and taking it out and using an alternate background (as declared in my stylesheet) to get rid of where WOULD be the featured post on http://tinyurl.com/dgyzk2 .

How can I do this with PHP? Would I do a simple if else statement to see whether or not the featured post was there and if not, post the alternate page style?

If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be totally awesome. I'd appreciate it.
