Post icon  Posted 22 March 2009 - 01:50 PM

I am tired of being accused of things because my son and I are on the same IP. So I want to creat a game pretty identical to Zelderex world 1?

1) Where did that come from?
2) I don't know what game that is, so um, ok?
3) The internet, a book, a person who has experience/knowledge.
3.1) College (a mixture of 3)

Let's not forget - straight up copying a game is not nice.

Not nice? Well, even having too similar gameplay will have people calling your game [Game Title Here]-like game. "It's just like Zelda only with different characters" or "that's just like Half Life 2 only with different guns".

It's easiest to combine enough features of games and change them to make it all fun than to rely on 1 or 2 games. Although 2 game hybrids can be pretty cool (ActRaiser for instance, combines SimCity with Zelda II in a way).

However, there are some games you want to make which copy a specific game, however, you change the game to fix everything you thought was wrong with the specific game. For example, Sigma Star saga had a great idea but horrid execution and came off as repetitive and disorienting. One might make a game just like it, only fun. "It's just like [Game Title Here], only fun" as a good description you would want people to give you.

Falcon 3.0 -> Falcon 4.0 -> The newer Falcon (forget the name), a bunch of kids (illegally) got "leaked" source code files, fixed it, and the company black-mailed them into selling it and all copyrights on the fixed version. The kids could legally join the company and help but, for some reason, they don't (or the company hasn't offered or something).

Making unofficial patches/additions to games is common - Diablo: Hellfire for example (although that's slightly different).
