Vote: What Keeps You Coming Back?

Posted 14 December 2004 - 01:43 PM

I'm trying to make some changes to the way we do things around here and want to hear what makes you come back to dream.in.code. Would you like to see more content? interviews? tutorials? news? an incentive to post? something fun to do between posting? something to work towards when posting? etc. etc.

Well, I picked 'helping' (not that I give a lot of help, particularily), mostly because it's the idea behind it that's worth coming here for...somewhat akin to the open source movement, which I support wholeheartedly. There's a lot of varied experience in this place, and most people are really good about offering advice and aid.

Plus, hanging with a guy called supersloth is just plain cool!

Hard to say, I guess...a lot of things keep me coming back, including the fact that my rampant alcoholism and pedophilia go relatively unnoticed here (kidding - I don't drink that much!).

Ya, this would be a great great way to bring old members back from the dead and get new members. Get 1000 posts.. err.. well, 605 posts, and get free beer and hookers!

Make it 18 good tutorials and add the beer and hookers to that, and it's a deal.

People like helping people more than forums or fun.

Who says this world is a wicked place?

I would say that those days are definitley coming back. I'm wondering if putting the lounge back on the top of the forum list would help keep people around once they've asked their question?!?! We have good traffic in other forums... I want to see people stick around once they post... would like to see the days of 25+ members online again!

thats kind of an exageration though vinny. it only seemed faster and a lot of us we're at lower skill levels, when so many people are at the same level it gave us a lot of room to help each other out, now some are more advanced and others haven't advanced at all. the amount of topics hasn't changed, in fact it's actually gone higher, the difference is that their are only a few people (usually) capable of giving coherent answers to those who ask, and they solve those questions quickly so their isnt a need for five page threads usually.

also im completely against re-integrating the lounge with the rest of the site, it was hard enough getting people to post anywhere before, and even now we have so many lounge-exsclusive users compared to the other forums. it would be a step backward.

also i noticed a down-trend of posting when we got rid of most of our moderators and team members, a lot of them became off put about no longer being on the 'official' team. but so many of them we're still being loung-exsclusive when it was part of the job function not to be, and we're never using their powers to edit or delete posts when it was completely warranted. i think the fact many people are getting over that, that we have added extremely intelligent and talented individuals like cyberscribe and amadeus to the team will help out a lot and hopefully prevent similar situations from occuring.

the backlash from that has just about worn off and a lot of people who havent been coming for a while have been coming back. i think so far we are headed in the right direction so long as we can keep the open line of communications with our users their. as well as having more events like our current competition which helps to bring in content as well as new members to the forum (like the last few days where we have had A LOT of new users posting, outside the loung too)
