Desktop Background Issues

Posted 14 April 2009 - 01:31 PM

I've seen several topics all over the place with similar problems. But their resolutions don't seem to help for me for some reason.

To describe my particular problem, I go to Personalize, and Change Desktop background as usual but all I get is this:

Posted Image

It's almost as if either Previewing or access to the images has been disabled. But I've looked through all the settings and Desktop Policies and those don't seem to be the problem. Also, I've also noticed another problem. When I go to the Pictures folder, I'm expecting to find previews of these images. I don't. They're all blank. The image name is there though. I'm stumped. Anyone experience a similar problem and have it fixed?

I've noticed the computer's becoming unusually slow lately too. I've ran Spyware and Virus searches and nothing seems to turn up. This is a rather strange problem that I've come across.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It might be a bad update. I am unsure if this is a personal PC or work PC. If you have the permissions to uninstall updates, go to Control Panel->Uninstall a Program->Left hand side at the top"View Installed Updates"->Then start uninstalling the most recent updates until it either fixes it or you get to when your problems started and it does nothing. Then run update manager and it will reinstall those.

If it does fix it, run update manager and it should install correctly this time. Otherwise I am stumped as well.

@CrazySpi
I'd say you are moving too quick.

SarumanTheWhite: What are your system specs?
How long has this been going on?
Have you installed anything or made any changes
to your computer before this happened?

It's an HP Pavilion, 4GB RAM and about 250GB HDD and it's a personal Laptop.

It's been going on for like a week or so. And no, haven't installed anything new lately besides Spybot Search&Destroy to scan for any possible Spyware, but that was after it already happened.

No, ALL images are effected. They're all blank. But when I double click them I can see them that way through Windows Photo Gallery.

Alright, you might have covered this but go into Internet Explorer (as most applications use it) and go into the settings. Scroll down to where images are in the advanced tab. Make sure "Show Pictures" is ticked. Not sure if it will hinder anything with Windows showing images oin the HD but it might solve it.

Hmm? That 'Show Pictures' only applies to Websites. Those pictures show up just fine.

It's the Folder Browsers that seem to be having the problem. I've sniffed around the Folder Options and those don't seem to be an issue. Not only the picture problem, but the laptop itself has become unusually slow. Perhaps I'll just do a factory reset. There's not a whole lot on it anyway.
