Access Denied!

Posted 03 January 2005 - 02:43 PM

Hi this is the first message I have put onto the internet about anything like this. I am not massivly computer literate but I am not afraid to probe about in the system and can run my pc fine.

However, I can't get into my System Volume Information folder. I tried it in safe mode and I still can't do it. I don't even know what the Sys Vol folder is though it has a very spacific title. The virus has been there for ages and I am sure it's the reason I keep getting the most random windows popping up EVERY TIME I try to go to an internet site. Every time I open up the Internet Explorer I get two sometimes three other windows. Sometimes the machine can't hack it and has to restart which is just too much when trying to do honest project research for college.

Is there anyone out there, with a few more brain sells than me, who can help me through this mess.

In some people's eyes I am probably quite new to computers as I have only had one for a couple of years and in that time I have learnt everything off my own back so a little assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Laters guys,

Are the windows that pop up other web pages or error messages?

If they are other web pages... you've got a bad case of spyware (very common) and there are several programs available to eliminate these pesty programs.

If they are error messages, it could be a virus or other error in the operating system. Does your virus scanner show you have a virus?

I run AVG anti virus and it occasioally detects that I have a virus in System Volume Information\_restore...etc etc. Then when I run the anti virus it detects nothing. I have no access to the System Volume information so can't get rid of whatever virus it is in safe mode.

It's other webpages that open when I go to the internet explorer. I also run Spybot search and destroy and Ad-Aware 6 regularly to get rid of anything else that might come along.

It's got me stumped!

Well, it certainly sounds like spyware is your problem (as mentioned by skyhawk). There are some spyware apps that are excellent at evading things like Ad-Aware. You may have to try something a little more robust (everyone has their favourites, I like SpySweeper - not sure why).

You may also want to go to the Add/Remove Orograms section of the control panel, and remove any programs (especially things entitled <name> toolbar, or some such thing) you don't recognize. There is small chance that the only way to truly rid yourself of the spyware is to wipe your drive and reinstall, and be careful about things you download after that. A better option may be to go with a browser like Firefox.

I will try these suggestions as I think that this is correct, I have no worries about reinstalling and might well do that but I am as much intregued by this irritating System Volume Information thing. How do I remove I virus that I can't get to? I am wondering why my access is denied. I feel pretty stupid at this point

are you logged into an adminstrator account on your box? if not you may not be able to mess with any system files.

tried it as administrator in safe mode but not on normal mode yet, it wouldn't let me get to the S V I in Safe Mode.
